Herrang

DIY Studio

Mimi – a Swedish opera singer – has asked for some portrait pictures. We were in Herrang, that is a small village in Sweden.
All I could use were big tents with white walls (and some flashes). Having the wall close we had a white background, having it far away we had a black background. Was fine except the midges.
Me and my girlfriend mad some test shots to be well prepared. So was Mimi having beautiful dress & make-up!
However imagine the situation. You are in Herrang, during summer in a dance camp. Everybody is wearing almost jogging suit because of dance classes. And a beautiful girl wearing costume walk through the village. Was a really surreal and funny situation.

Stealth mode

Sometimes you have to be in stealth mode – even on a concert.
Taking pictures of a rock concert is easy – you can be loud, you can run around – just try to survive the crazy fans :)
What about being in a small room (less than 100 sqm), where you have unplugged opera singers? The smallest noise might ruin the concert and mood.
What to do? I had to use the clapping moments. Still could catch some great moments.

It isn’t so difficult

In the last days it was so great to think about these photos, that might not be so difficult to capture.
What you can see on the picture is a sunup in Sweden, on the beach. One difficulty could be to get to the beach, far away.
An other challenge to get up. If you want to have great pictures with sunup you have to get up 3-4, get to the location and press the button. If you get up at 3-4 setting your camera isn’t so easy…
There is a solution! What about not going to bed? Just wait until morning comes and make the picture. I found it as difficult as the first option. Unless you have some great parties until morning. Like this occasion. We were dancing till ~5 in the morning and went to the beach by bicycle to make these pictures.
The whole place, time and situation (going from a crazy loud party to the silent calm nature) expressed peace perfectly. Something I missed in the last weeks – till I was thinking about these pictures.

Looking for something else

We are always looking for something different.
However many times we are just ending up at the same spot, having the same model, … And you do not want to end up the 100000th same picture of Eiffel tower, right.
I was in Herrang for the 6th time now. Where 100 people make picture of the big dance event. So here are some pics that show the peaceful life of this small village.

Drop of silence

I’ve added some more pictures to the previous album. Some dancing ones. However this post is about something different :)
Every week in Herrang we have a cultural activities day when we dance a bit less. One option is a small temple close to Herrang. Of course I went there on a not cultural day – so it was completely empty. Having 24 hours music around you and after complete silence is a real change, a real experience.
Also the temple inside is a real mix of different styles that hardly match your memories how a temple should look. So I was just sitting there for half an hour without making a picture. That helped me to form my ideas how to capture that place. I posted 2 pictures where you can see bigger part of the building however I felt that the mood I’m looking for is hidden in small details.
What I loved in the details that they are far from being perfect. The lines are not aligned, the walls are not even, there are some small cracks. However everything has a beautiful texture. Yeah, it is NOT digital.
So now I’ve edited the pictures till they became perfect – to show the imperfection!

Herrang 2009

It is the biggest. It is the best. And only some thousand people know about it. Like a small secret world.
Spent 2 weeks in the fabulous dance camp. Mainly dances & chatted. Sometimes had time to make some pics of my friends. Here are some of my friends.
Will post a second part.

Logical

It seems this week’s series does not have pics from the same spot :) This picture is from Herrang, Sweden. Nobody knows this place except swing dancers.
I was there in a camp and during breaks I made some pictures of my friends. Katja has thousands different faces. So I’ve chosen her hair to be the main topic :) There will more pics from this series!
